Our thoughts are with the family and friends of former student Ruth McCance (Class of 1986)

As reported in the news this week, Australian climber Ruth McCance is amongst the eight missing climbers  believed to have been caught in an avalanche on the Himalayan slopes.  The search and rescue team endeavoured to find the climbers on Nanda Devi through difficult weather conditions. At the time of going to press it is understood that Ruth is among the seven bodies that have been recovered, with the search for the eighth member expected to resume after the monsoon season has passed.

We were contacted by Johanna Hull née Wray (Class of 1986) who remembers Ruth....

Ruth was born and educated in the UK.  She attended WGGS from 1979 to 1986 and was in my form until fifth form and continued into the sixth form going on to Manchester University.  She was an active member of school, in the choir including in the chorus for Dido and Aeneas and in She Stoops to Conquer performed in the sixth form.  She was a very high achiever academically - straight A at O level although not known for any sporting prowess!  She was always interested in nature and the countryside.  I lost touch with her after school although was aware she’d left for Australia about 20 years ago and married about 15 years ago - its possible an old girl or two went out there for the wedding.  Her older sister Judtih also attended WGGS in the sixth from from 1979 to 1981.
