ANNOUNCEMENT FROM THE CHAIR OF GOVERNORS
Announcement to the school community from Mr Percy McCloskey, Chair of Governors
23rd February 2018
Dear Parents
The Chair of Governors, Mr Percy McCloskey, is pleased to announce to the school community that,
following a rigorous two day assessment and appointment process involving three candidates, the Board of
Governors has formally appointed Miss Sylvia Tai as the new Headmistress of Watford Grammar School
for Girls. She will be the nineteenth headmistress of the school and will take up her new appointment on
1st April 2018.
Miss Tai was born and brought up in Watford. She graduated from the University of Liverpool and after
gaining her PGCE from the University of Oxford, became a Geography teacher in 1992. She is currently
undertaking a Master’s Degree in Education Management at Kings’ College, London. Miss Tai has taught
in Tring, Botswana, St Albans and Mill Hill, and joined Watford Girls as an Assistant Head in 2007; she was
appointed to the post of Deputy Head in 2014. Since September 2017 she has been Acting Headmistress.
Her wide range of experience has enabled her to develop a strong understanding of key educational issues,
such as pastoral care, curriculum oversight, strategic development and data analysis.
Apart from education, Miss Tai’s interests lie in developing global awareness. She has led various school
expeditions to places such as Mozambique, Borneo and Nepal.
The Governing Body looks forward to supporting Miss Tai in moving the school to its next stage of
development and congratulates her on her appointment.
Yours faithfully
Percy McCloskey
Chair of Governors.
