OGA Reunion Evening

Classes of 60s, 70s and 80s
Classes of 60s, 70s and 80s

By Sarah Funnell & Harpreet Phillips (Alumnae Relations)

"Last Thursday the doors of the school stayed open to welcome past students who left WGGS during the 60s, 70s and 80s.

We welcomed over 100 guests to the Tennet Centre, (some coming straight from the airport!) where they enjoyed drinks and canapés expertly made by Innovate, our caterers, and reminisced over life at WGGS during their time here.

In the school archives we found shields and trophies for former sports tournaments, plans of the school from the 1960s and even an old school timetable from the late 1950s which must have been a labour of love for someone to produce in such fine detail.

The alumnae were then treated to talks from former Headmistress Dame Helen Hyde and Jane Willis, a former student from the class of 1973 and now a School Governor.  Jane talked in detail about school life in the past, which stirred up many memories with the audience members. Molly McCleod followed, who successfully gave her first speech as Head Girl to a very appreciative audience about current life as a WGGS student.

The evening continued with tours of the school with Lady’s Close, the Main Hall, the Headmistress office and the Library being some of the highlights and cause of further reminiscing, especially the bench outside the Headmistress Office!

What struck us as the night continued is that you are always a Watford Girl, whether you came here in the 60s or are here now, the sense of history, community and belonging was shared by everyone in that room.

The OGA was set up so past and present Watford Girls could keep in touch with each other and the school. We now want to build upon this to create a network so alumnae can help each other with their shared connection of being a Watford Girl. If you can help with career events, talks or mentoring please email us at oldgrammarians@watfordgirls.herts.sch.uk  we’d love to hear from you."
